YouTube reportedly canceling original series as it moves away from premium content

YouTube has canceled two of its largest original series, and is not accepting releases for new scripted programs, according to sources who spoke with Bloomberg . The science fiction series Origin and Overthinking with Kat & June have been canceled, and YouTube no longer plans to compete with Netflix, Amazon Prime and, soon, Apple in the original programming.

The news comes when Apple is preparing to make its own momentum in the original content with the planned launch of a new TV broadcast service. Apple plans to spend up to $ 2 billion on original content this year from established Hollywood figures such as Oprah Winfrey and Chris Evans. Initially, the service is expected to be based more on third-party programs from channels such as HBO, Showtime and Starz, as Apple develops its own original programming.

At one point, Google had very different plans for its broadcast service, which it hoped would offer original content exclusively to paid subscribers. However, at the end of last year, reports emerged that the company would change its approach to subscriptions and, instead, would focus on sponsorships and advertising support for its future programs.

YouTube Premium (originally called YouTube Red) is expected to remain available, but will focus on music instead of premium original content. In addition to including functions focused on music, such as background reproduction, YouTube has also commissioned the programming of emerging musical artists. Although the original video content will continue, it will increasingly be done in collaboration with YouTube creators rather than Hollywood stars and studios.
