The latest version of Windows Defender has an error that will cause fast and complete scans to fail after only a few seconds and scan only a small number of files (via ZDNet). The error affects Windows Defender version 4.18.1908.7 and later. Several users reported the problem in the Microsoft support forums, as well as in Reddit.
Version 4.18.1908.7 of Windows Defender was released earlier this week. The error that caused the scans to fail was introduced while Microsoft was attempting to correct a separate error in Tuesday's July 2019 patch update.
In addition to Windows Defender in Windows 10, the error affects all versions of Windows Defend on all versions of Windows. As ZDNet pointed out, the error also affects Security Essentials.
Microsoft confirmed to ZDNet that the company is working on a solution for the error. Microsoft noted that real-time scanning protection still works despite the error and that malware must be detected in real time.
If you want to scan your system while the error still affects Windows Defender, you can still perform a custom scan with the tool.
