Windows 10 20H1 build 18963 is out with improvements for Task Manager, Virtual Desktops, and Windows Search

dd2b8a94b9559143c6c97d239f6daa0f

That was a bit unexpected, but Microsoft has just released a new compilation of Windows 20H1 for Fast Ring Insiders, and it's quite large. In fact, preliminary version 18963 brings the GPU temperature to the Task Manager for PCs with dedicated GPUs, something that PC players should appreciate.

Advanced users who juggle multiple virtual desktops throughout the day will also be delighted to know that it is finally possible to rename virtual desktops in this compilation, and name changes will persist after a reboot. For now, this feature will only be available to 50% of Fast Ring Insiders users, and Microsoft says it will implement it for more Insiders in the future.

There are many other new features in this compilation, including mouse cursor speed in Settings, improvements in Windows Search, and Microsoft also made some changes to make a new account image in Windows appear more quickly in Windows applications .

Another important change in this compilation is that Notepad is becoming a Microsoft Store application. After years of neglect, it has been updated with a couple of recent new features in recent months, and this change will allow Microsoft to update it separately from Windows updates.

You can check everything new in this compilation below: [19659006] The GPU temperature reaches the Task Manager

One of the long-standing requests we have been tracking for the Task Manager is to add support from temperature monitoring, and with today's construction we are moving forward on that question. If you have a dedicated GPU card, we will now increase the current temperature next to your listing on the Performance tab.

We hope that as the change! If you have more comments about the Task Manager, feel free to share it. To make suggestions or report problems in this space, press WIN + F and submit comments in the Desktop Environment> Task Manager in the Feedback Hub.

Notes:

  • The GPU temperature display in Task Manager is currently only supported if you have a dedicated GPU card.
  • You may need an updated graphics controller to view the temperature. Specifically, one that supports WDDM version 2.4 (or higher) is required. To check which version your PC has, press WIN + R and enter dxdiag. On the Display tab, your WDDM version will appear next to the Controller Model.
  • Currently, the temperature value is only supported in degrees Celsius.

Rename your virtual desktops

Showing virtual desktops in the Task View, all of which have established names.

There are virtual desktops to help you visually and cognitively separate different tasks on your PC. They can also be useful when making presentations, allowing you to prepare demonstrations at different desks. Something that we have heard loud and clear is that you want to be able to establish names for your different desks, in order to help cement the separation between the workspaces, and we are excited to share that the deployment to Insiders in the fast ring is exactly that !

Do you want to try it? With the change, when you open the Task View (by selecting the Task View button on the taskbar or by pressing WIN + Tab), when you click on the name of your desktop, you will now change to an editable field where you can set the name in being what you want (including emoji). You can also right-click on the desired desktop thumbnail in Task View, and a context menu should appear with a Rename entry. If you don't have any additional desktop created yet, select "New desktop" in the Task view to get started.

And yes, as we know you will ask, the names persist restarting. 🙂

Currently, this change is valid for 50% of Insiders in the Fast ring, and we will expand the deployment in the coming weeks as we evaluate the quality of the experience.

Improves the Optional Features page in Configuration

According to your comments, we have made a number of usability improvements on the Optional Features page in Settings (Settings> Applications and Features> Optional Features), and are now starting to Implement Insiders in the fast ring.

  • Better list management : You can now search the lists of optional features and sort them by Name, Size and Date of installation.
  • More useful information : You can now see the installation date for each optional feature in your list of & # 39; Installed features & # 39 ;. We have also added function dependencies to the description of each optional function in the list of functions available for installation.
  • Easier page navigation : See the status of your latest installations / uninstallations / cancellations directly on the main page in the & # 39; Last actions & # 39 ;. You can now add optional features and view your history through pop-up dialog boxes, so you never have to navigate outside the home page

The Notepad has been a much-loved text editor in Windows for more than 30 years. In recent releases, we have made a series of minor improvements to Notepad based on your comments (including extended end-of-line support, surround search and indication of when there is unsaved content). Starting with this compilation, we are making a change so that future Notepad updates are automatically available through the store. This will allow us the flexibility to respond to problems and comments outside the limits of the Windows versions. As always, if you have any comments about Notepad, we welcome you in the Comments Center in Applications> Notepad.

Changes to the image of your Windows account

Changing the image of the account you use to log in to Windows is now better than ever! Your updated image will now be displayed quickly in Windows, applications and many of the Microsoft sites you use every day. Steps

  1. Open "Your information" in the Windows settings by pressing the Windows key and typing "Your information," And selecting "Your account information."
  2. Use the options in & # 39; Create your image & # 39; to select a new image for your account.

Note: We are still working with many sites and applications that should be updated to work well with this new feature, for example, the account manager control that appears in the upper right corner of many Microsoft websites is updated every 24 hours. This will be changed in the coming months to Update quickly when you change your account image.

Windows Search Enhancements

We wanted to take a moment to cover some of the server-side search enhancements that I have We have been implementing. in his comments:

Tips for improving the best match results

Showing Windows Search - "free" has been entered in the search box, and "Storage Sense" It is the top result. Under it, it says "Related: release." "Width =" 671 "height =" 584 "data-recalc-dims =" 1

Our goal with Windows Search is to provide a simple, para-use experience, and a key aspect of this is to make The results are easy to understand. Something we have heard from you is surprising that sometimes the search results of the configuration do not match your search. To help address this, in certain cases where the Best Match result is not an exact match for your search, a "Related:" line will be included below the result to help clarify why this result appears. We will expand this function to include the search for applications in the coming weeks. This feature is now available in both internal and retail versions in English (United States).
