Facebook and Oculus finally revealed a release date for their Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S headsets: May 21. Both headphones will be shipped to 22 countries next month, they will cost $ 399, and you can pre-order them today.
Oculus Quest is a long-awaited independent VR headset that Oculus announced last year. It works without external tracking cameras or a separate computer, using a Snapdragon mobile chipset. The Oculus Rift S is an update to the Oculus Rift 2016; It is not a "Rift 2", but an update that replaces the old Rift tracking cameras with a more convenient inside-out tracking. Neither is a definite must buy, but the new Insight tracking system has impressed us, and Oculus is constantly backing some of the most ambitious virtual reality games.
Like Oculus The previous headphones, the Rift S and the Quest will be sent through the Oculus site and a handful of retail partners. You can find both at Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart. GameStop will also sell the Quest, and Microsoft will store the Rift S. After the release of May 21, Microsoft will also offer demonstrations of the headphones. The Quest will also be available for demonstrations at Best Buy.
You will still need a game computer to use the Rift S, but Oculus is not changing the recommended specifications, so if you already have a Rift, you should not need to update your computer (If you have a gaming laptop, you can make it easier to use, since you will not need many ports for USB cameras). The Quest will be available at two price points, depending on the storage: it starts at $ 399 for 64 GB, and you can pay $ 499 for 128 GB. The games that we tested in our review unit have been quite efficient in terms of space, so the first one may not be as limiting as it seems.
The Rift S plays all the Rift games you expect. The Quest will launch with around 50 titles, many of which will be ported from Oculus Rift. The highlights include the rhythm game Beat Saber the action game Moss indie shooter Superhot and the painting program Tilt Brush along with the new games Dance Central and Vader Immortal .
These are not the only large headphones that open pre-orders this week. Valve has just announced that it will start taking orders tomorrow for a new high-end headset called the Valve Index, which will be launched later this year.
