Telegram gained three million new users during Facebook outage

Three million new users have enrolled in Telegram during the last 24 hours, during a period in which Facebook (and Facebook Messenger), Instagram and WhatsApp experienced major blackouts around the world. The new users were announced by the founder and CEO of Telegram, Pavel Durov, on his personal Telegram channel. It is a large number for a service that has 200 million active users as of March 2018.

Telegram is a free encrypted messaging service similar to WhatsApp, and currently works with user donations instead of the ad model oriented used by Facebook, which is enabled by the data it collects from its users. Telegram has always emphasized the protection of its user's privacy as one of its key features, and has added end-to-end encryption support in 2013, three years before WhatsApp.
