Telegram adds the option to delete chats on other people’s devices

Telegram, the WhatsApp rival that won 3 million followers when Facebook had a one-day outage this month, has presented a major update focused on privacy. From the latest version of Telegram, available on iOS, Android and through a web client, you can now delete messages for all participants in your chats, regardless of who sent them or when they were sent. Previously, Telegram allowed users a 48-hour window in which they could delete their own sent messages, both on their device and for others. Now, the time limit has been removed and you can delete all the chat history on your device and that of any other person who was part of the chat.

While this may seem like a drastic measure, Telegram founder Pavel Durov justifies it. as an act to help people take control of their digital history:

An old message that you have already forgotten can be taken out of context and used against you decades later. A quick message you sent to a girlfriend at school can chase you in 2030 when you decide to apply for mayor. We have to admit: despite all our progress in encryption and privacy, we have very little real control over our data.

This will sound a familiar tone to anyone who has heard about the dismissal and rehiring by Disney of Hollywood director James Gunn. to offensive tweets in his past, or the way Kevin Hart tweeted to be the host of the Oscars. Giving people the freedom to get rid of past indiscretions is, according to Durov, the heart of Telegram's newly added ability to purge complete chat histories.

The implementation of Telegram of this new privacy measure could be counterproductive. I tried it and discovered that it does not leave any notification that a chat message had existed before it was deleted. Therefore, if I ever feel inspired by malice, I can selectively prune my chat history with someone, eliminate the essential context and distort their words. Perhaps the ability to delete messages from others is going too far, but given the effort of Telegram is to allow users to eliminate entire threads of conversation, it seems that was inevitable.

On the more carefree side of things, Telegram has enhanced its emoji and GIF search, and new sets of stickers have been added showing the images of Vladimir Putin, Gave Newell of Valve, Snoop Dogg, Ryan Gosling, Borat , Bender and Yolandi from Die Antwoord.
