Spotify today announced that it will launch a new Wear OS application next week. The standalone Wear OS app has been significantly improved over the previous Spotify app on Android Wear, where users wanted to rely on third-party apps when playing music through a streaming service. The new Spotify for OS provides better control over music playback and navigation playlists. Most importantly, it adds Spotify Connect, which lets you play music from connected speakers.
The UI is very weak with 15 second rewind options when pausing or skipping tracks and listening to podcasts. You have access to recently played tracks, and there is a small heart icon that allows you to save the track to a playlist. This app works with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and LTE, so you can listen to music and podcasts from your phone, laptop, Sonos speakers, or any other device you've set up with Spotify Connect. Unlike the Spotify app on Samsung Gear, however, offline playback is not yet available.
With this news, Spotify has partnered with Fossil to pre-install apps in November on fossil Gen 4 smart watches and Michael Kors Access runway smart watches. You can download Spotify from Google Play.
