After a long absence from the platform, Spotify will return to Roku's streaming player and Roku TV starting today. Devices running TV on Roku OS 9 (just launched) and OS 8.2 can point to the channel store and download the Spotify app. In addition to simply running on your home screen with your remote, the new Spotify for Roku app lets you play music through Spotify Connect, so you can control playback on other devices like your smartphone.
Spotify has removed the app from its Roku product last December, and has been unsatisfied with the version of the software and promised that it will be better. At the time, the company said, "I look forward to the overall improvement in service."
The reorganized Roku app is very similar to Spotify's Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Samsung optimized TV apps for Samsung. It provides TVs and more, giving you full access to playlists and libraries. As always, paid subscribers can stream music to higher quality and avoid ad breaks.
Today Spotify announced that it will offer free Google Home Mini to family account subscribers. It's especially relevant for Roku owners since the company recently supported voice commands via the Google Assistant. The Assistant allows you to turn the Roku TV on or off and to run most applications, except Netflix, on all supported devices.
If you can install the Spotify app from Roku, Roku will announce that all Roku TVs are compatible and that Roku Streamers model number 3600 or higher is supported.
