Some airlines are banning Apple’s MacBook Pros even if they weren’t recalled

In June, Apple withdrew the MacBook Pro 2015 with Retina display, sold between September 2015 and February 2017, because the battery "may present a fire safety risk," and the FAA soon reminded airlines that Do not carry these laptops with defective batteries on board. But some airlines are now banning Apple laptops, whether they have a defective battery or not, as reported by Bloomberg .

Virgin Australia does not risk: it is forbidding that each MacBook be transported in checked luggage In a notice on its "Dangerous Goods" page, the company does not differentiate by shape, screen size or year of manufacture: all " Apple MacBooks ”only can be taken to airplanes in transport. in luggage

That may sound extreme, since the vast majority of Apple laptops have not been recalled. However, the policy makes it appear that you can still use your laptops once on the flight.

But if Qantas Airways is flying with a 15-inch MacBook Pro, that last part may not be true. The carrier not only prohibits all 15-inch MacBook Pro from checked baggage, but will not allow you to use them in flight.

"Until further notice, all 15-inch Apple MacBook Pro should be transported in hand luggage and" A Qantas spokesman told ZDNet.

While it is understandable that Quantas cannot easily tell if a MacBook Pro 15-inch 2015 has one of the batteries removed or not – that would require searching for a serial number online – it would be nice if they exempted the MacBook Pro 2016 and later with Touch Bar, which has several visual features quite easy to distinguish and has not had a battery memory to know.

If you have an affected 15-inch MacBook Pro, Apple says it will replace your battery for free, but you will have to send your laptop to an Apple repair center. You can check if your unit is eligible for a replacement here.
