Snap reportedly settled with women who alleged discrimination after layoffs

Snap reached an agreement with three women last year who alleged discrimination in the company after they were fired, according to The Wall Street Journal . Snap was previously accused of having a "toxic" workplace with a "generalized sexist vibe," and the new allegations say that women were not given the opportunity to move up the company's ranks.

It is said that the dismissals had a disproportionate female target, according to the Journal with a round of job cuts that eliminated only women from a couple of small teams. At least three people received cash and additional actions on their compensation package after submitting complaints, the report says.

Snap says that the dismissals "impacted both men and women" and that "the decisions we made in determining the people affected had absolutely nothing to do with gender." The men also received additional compensation after the negotiations, according to a Snap spokesman.

Of the 218 people Snap fired during the first half of 2018, 70 percent were men, the spokesperson said. Snap also disagreed with the characterization that only women were fired from the pair of teams he described Journal and said that some people were assigned new roles because the team was being dissolved.

technology companies, Snap does not publish diversity reports that detail the representation among its workforce. That means we do not know how many of your employees are women, which would give you a clearer idea of whether 30 percent is a disproportionate number. But it is likely that certain teams within Snap are overwhelmingly masculine: last year, the company told Cheddar that women only had 13 percent of their technology roles. Cheddar leaked an internal email from Snap last year, in which an outgoing engineer accused the company of being unwelcoming to women and people of color. In its report, the Journal adds that women believe that male employees with less experience had leadership roles, and say that they did not receive annual performance reviews for years. Snap has implemented a regular review process since the dismissals, according to the report.
