Netflix plans to start testing a top 10 list for streaming clients in the UK. It will allow them to see what programs and movies are currently the most popular throughout the service. The top 10 will be updated weekly, and each genre / category will get its own list.
"For those who want to see what others are seeing, this can make the choice of titles even easier," CEO Reed Hastings wrote in the letter to investors this quarter. "After a few months, we will decide whether to finalize or extend the test." The test will begin at the end of this quarter.
The move is a small but notable step for Netflix, which has always been cautious about audience data and reluctant to share strong streaming metrics. That remains true: you will not be able to see how many people have seen a specific article recently, but a top 10 is even more than what we have had to follow before to evaluate what it is that is tending in the service.
Word of mouth is pretty effective at pointing out what's new on Netflix, but it will be fascinating to see what fills the list and the balance between licensed content and Netflix originals.
