Microsoft has begun providing detailed information about Surface events that will be held in New York next month. The software giant today sent another invitation to journalists, attaching a different image, which looks like the Surface logo and processor. The invitation also announced that the event will begin October 10 at 10 am. Satya Nadella and Panos Panay attended and knew important news was coming this year.
Nadella didn't attend the Surface event last year, and Microsoft refreshed the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop lines. We unveiled a new black option, Surface Studio 2, and released new Surface headphones. Nadella's attendance this year suggests that Microsoft has something important to announce. Oh, and Far North Panay is pumped.
This year's event will focus on new hardware at the end of the year, refreshing the Surface line. Rumor has it that Microsoft will offer a new Surface Pro next month in New York City with AMD-powered Surface Laptops, Qualcomm-based Surfaces, and USB-C. This event invitation may hint at these processor changes that look like a piece of machined aluminum in the shape of silicon. Microsoft's previous invitation was 10/2 in silver, perhaps more teasingly before October 2.
Hardware is not the only focus. The event will also cover the experience that Microsoft will offer on this Surface hardware. When Microsoft is ready to launch its own ARM-based Surface, you need to hear more about how Windows adapts to work better on this hardware. It will include Microsoft's commitment to dual-screen Surface devices and a Windows Lite plan.
A source familiar with Microsoft's efforts is Verge designed for the company to showcase a new dual-screen and foldable tablet / laptop hybrid that will be released in 2020 by Microsoft's Surface devices for at least two years. Microsoft demonstrated this new device under code name "Centaurus" during an internal meeting. Earlier this year.
Microsoft is also working closely with Intel and some OEM partners to develop a new variant of Windows, code-named "Windows Lite," designed to power this hardware. Windows Lite is a stripped-down version of Windows that initially prioritizes dual-screen devices. The hardware itself may look very similar to Microsoft's original Courier concept.
Intel is forcing OEMs to create this new hardware category. Laptop manufacturers are currently testing both foldable displays and dual screen devices. The Windows Lite interface is similar to Windows 10, but it's much simpler and modern like Microsoft does using the Surface Hub Shell and Windows Phone Continuum user interface.
Microsoft may unveil mysterious portable speakers. According to a patent application discovered earlier this week, the size and design of the unannounced device looks similar to Google's Home Mini. Microsoft is likely to use this speaker for Microsoft Teams software, and it could also be a Surface brand.
Microsoft plans to live stream this Surface event, and The Verge will keep you updated on the latest news.
