Microsoft’s mysterious portable speaker revealed in patent filing

Microsoft has prototyped portable speakers and microphones that can improve meetings and will likely see the end product. The new patent list released by Windows United shows portable speakers that are similar in size and design to Google's Home Mini. Microsoft mentions Google's devices in its patent applications, but it says little about portable speakers.

One of the inventors, Malek Chalabi, has this portable speaker in the meeting room. Microsoft showed last year's impressive conference room at Build last year, and the company has a prototype device that improves meetings in the lab. Another inventor listed in this patent is Dustin Brown, leading the "Industrial Design Efforts to Produce and Prototype Enhanced Hardware and Experience" for Microsoft's initiative lab.

The portable speaker itself seems to have a fabric wrapped on top, with volume buttons and dialing, answering and muting functions. This suggests that it is related to the Microsoft team and the meeting room, but I'm not sure if this particular device is a Surface brand. The device appears to have a removable pedestal, which you can probably charge and place around the meeting room.

Microsoft is holding a Surface hardware event in New York City on October 2nd and will see this particular device next month. Current rumors suggest that Microsoft will release new Surface Pros that include AMD-based Surface Laptops, ARM-based Surfaces, and USB-C.

Microsoft may publicly unveil a new dual-screen device with the code name "Centaurus" at its October event, which has been working at Centaurus for more than two years and is designed as a new wave hero device. Dual screen tablet / laptop hybrid powered by Windows Core OS, also known as Windows Lite.
