Microsoft just teased a slick new Minecraft AR game for your phone

Microsoft has begun to make fun of what appears to be a new game Minecraft for mobile devices. The software giant used a video at the end of the masterful presentation of the company Compilation 2019 today to show Minecraft in augmented reality, running on a phone. In the video, Minecraft creative director Saxs Persson leaves his phone in a bank outside the Washington State Convention Center where the Microsoft Build developers conference takes place. A passerby picks it up and can see Minecraft running in AR, suggesting that Microsoft is preparing a new game.

It's not clear what this game will be Minecraft but it could be a killer app for augmented reality. We have not seen many applications or games since Pokémon Go that have demonstrated the potential of augmented reality, and Pokémon Go has been downloaded more than 500 million times.

Microsoft is not comment more on the plans for Minecraft AR. The teaser also notes that more information will arrive on May 17, the tenth anniversary of Minecraft . Microsoft has previously shown Minecraft running on HoloLens headphones, but that was just a technological demonstration instead of a new game. The Microsoft teaser feels like something bigger, especially because it is clearly linked to 10 years of Minecraft . We should learn much more on May 17.
