Microsoft is once again redesigning the Xbox One dashboard

console home PR 940

Microsoft plans to renew the Xbox One panel once again, just two years after the last redesign changed the Xbox Guide and allowed users to set several blocks of content in the Home section. The new panel will be released to all Xbox One users later this fall, and Microsoft said the version that is being deployed to select Xbox Insiders is still experimental today.

First, you'll see that the top navigation bar has been replaced by four buttons to access the Microsoft Store, the Xbox Game Pass catalog, the Mixer and the Xbox Community. The "ads" are still there in a new Discovery section, just below the most recently used games and applications.

This new experimental dashboard will be deployed in a subset of Xbox Insiders in the Alpha and Alpha Skip Ahead rings. Microsoft says it will listen to the comments and make some changes before it is extended to all Xbox One owners later this fall.

In addition to the redesigned panel, Microsoft also announced some upcoming changes to voice commands on Xbox One. In short, Microsoft is removing the built-in Cortana wizard from Xbox One, redirecting users to the Xbox ability for Cortana and Alexa in other devices.

Xbox and is moving away from console experiences to cloud-based assistant experiences. This means that you can no longer talk to Cortana through your headphones. However, you can use Xbox Skill for Cortana through the Cortana app on iOS, Android and Windows or through the Harmon Kardon Invoke speaker to power your Xbox One, adjust volume, start games and applications, capture screenshots and more, as it does. It can be done with Alexa-enabled devices today. We will also continue to improve the ability of Xbox in all supported digital assistants and continue to expand our Xbox voice capabilities in the future based on comments from fans.

These changes are being implemented today on Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Skip Ahead ring, and will be part of the next major Xbox One update that will take place this fall. The new console transmission function that Microsoft announced at E3 2019 is also expected to be sent later this year, but Microsoft has not analyzed it today.
