Recently, we had the opportunity to interview Ilyon Dynamics one of the leading casual mobile game developers in the market. You probably know them as the owners of the original Bubble Shooter game which is one of the most popular casual games currently on the market. In the Google Play Store, Bubble Shooter currently has over 100 million downloads and 4.2 user review scores with more than 560k comments. We asked Ilyon some questions that many of you will find interesting and this is what they said:
How did it all start?
It all started in 2013 when four friends decided to create a game version for mobile devices. Popular Bubble Shooter game. A game that has been played more than billions of times on the web.
How many people were included in the creation of their first game?
In general terms, four team members created it for Android and iOS .
How many people are working in Ilyon now?
More than 150 workers.
Its global success Bubble Shooter obtained more than 100 million downloads on Google Play alone. It is one of the most downloaded games on mobile devices in general. Can you share the necessary ingredients for such a successful game?
Of course. A combination of love for the game, attention to detail and being very attentive to users. We continue to add new content, measuring the vital elements of the game (crashes and NRAs) and monitoring user satisfaction (reviews, ratings, retention and commitment).
In addition, before adding new features, we consult with our teams to ensure that it is a real added value for users.
After adding the function, we launched it in a phased version and continue to monitor user satisfaction and the vital metrics mentioned above.
Can you share? The number of players at this time on all platforms?
Our company has more than 700 million installations and millions playing daily.
The game is still updated regularly, how long do you plan to release new content? We try to update the game at least once a month.
We hear you have an office that accepts pets, does it include exotic animals? Unicorns, manticores, dragons?
There are no unicorns or dragons, but lots of pop dolls and furry four-legged friends 🙂
What are you working on right now? We focus on several exciting casual titles: Match 3, Tap 2 and Bubble Spinner games. For example, this new title: Island Blast
Can you tell us about the direction you plan to follow in the future? Any particular genre?
We are still focusing on casual games, but we try to diversify our portfolio with more games and adding new interesting features. For example, social, contests, missions and some more surprises that will be announced during this and next year!
Any advice for small independent teams that have just started working on their first games?
- Love your game (if you don't enjoy playing, don't do it, it will take a large part of your life)
- Start with a little and iterate (don't invest too much in a new game: create the minimum viable product (MVP ), see if you achieve relevant retention and participation metrics and only then add more content
- Plan your monetization (in the initial phase of the game, you need to know what your monetization strategy is: IAP, static ads, rewarded video, etc. ), because much of the flow and economy of the game will be affected by it.
However, do not spend too much time in your monetization at this stage, as it will take a large part of your time. if your game will be lucrative or not.
There you go, if you plan to make your own games you should listen to the advice of the big boys. They did not get there by pure luck, but by strategy, dedication, hard work and, in their own words, loving what you did is the key ingredient.
We thank Ilyon Dynamics for taking the time to answer our questions, and we hope to see what they have in store for the future.
