Huawei Mate 20 Pro review: the best phone America can’t get

Last year, Huawei was working behind the scenes to secure the first carrier in the United States with the newly released Mate 10 Pro flagship phone. The plan was to relaunch AT & T as a star partner at Huawei's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January. With the exception of the last minute, US government pressure left AT & T out of the negotiations, embarrassing and frustrating Huawei. A month later, the FBI, CIA and NSA warned US citizens about Huawei calls, and they worsened a month later, arguing that they had raised security and privacy risks because of their relationship with the Chinese government.

We can not back up the unproven allegations against Huawei, but in fact we can not buy or unlock new Mate 20 Pro in the US. It's embarrassing because it means that Americans will fall in one of the most powerful, feature-rich and captivating devices of the year. Huawei Mate 20 Pro is not the best Android smartphone, but some of them are the best ones right now.

In Europe, the price of this super android device is 1,049 euros $ 1,200, including tax. It is placed at the top of the premium phone dummy. For comparison, the Galaxy Note 9 has already been discounted at a starting price of $ 999, and Amazon is now contracting to offer 128GB microSD cards and 128GB onboard storage for 799 euros. So I will never forgive folly on this Huawei phone. Two years ago, Huawei was a budget alternative for Samsung and Apple, and the disadvantages of the device were justified at an affordable price.

Good stuff

  • Batteries last longer
  • Strong performance
  • Cool display
  • 3D face unlocking is fast and reliable.
    • Camera lacks dynamic range of Google Pixel.
    • Master AI image processing is still inconsistent enough to be reliable.
    • Some software bugs and annoyances

Now the most expensive mass market Android flagship, Huawei Mate 20 Pro needs a clear win to justify its location. Battery life and performance are assessed in two ways.

in terms of speed and battery life is the 4,200mAh battery. I never had a cell phone that had this battery and gave it a lightweight, easy-to-use feel. Huawei is doing great power optimization because it can not consume this battery fast. Alto 's Adventure had 2 hours of continuous gameplay, consuming only 18% of the battery, so I had to consume my phone completely through a marathon session. And when I put the mate 20 pro idle, the battery ratio hardly moves. Vlad Savov / Vlad Savov / The Verge

While testing this phone with a convenient wireless charge in Google Pixel Stand, it is basically less than 50% No charges were applied. Typical days will include dozens of photos, generic messages and emails, some videos, lots of games, and you will not worry about whether the Mate 20 Pro will last until the evening. This is far superior to the Google Pixel 3 XL and Samsung Galaxy Note 9, and absolutely disconcerting a small mobile phone like the Pixel 3. Huawei's small special effects of this generation are the Mate 20 Pro reversing So one way to get along with Pixel 3 is to use my ultra-high (expensive) phone as an external battery.

In terms of performance, Huawei's claim to Kirin 980 outperforms the Snapdragon 845 stand. The speed and responsiveness of the Mate 20 Pro is similar to that of the iPhone. The app starts quickly, the camera shows zero delay, and the gesture animation is smooth and fluid. Huawei's multitasking system can strip out the iPhone X system wholesaler and criticize all the plagiarism you want, but thanks to Huawei for replicating the softness of the iOS experience and not really copying it.

In the game, the Mate 20 Pro is still the best performance on Android. Again, Alto's Adventure On the ground, both Galaxy Note 9 and Pixel 3 XL would have stood at a predictable point (not worthy of note: I have not tried the Razer Phone 2 yet) . In general, the character reaches the culmination of a large combo that gains speed. The Mate 20 Pro does not suffer from the problem.

Huawei tried to identify all the wish list items that Mate 20 Pro could think of. 790 nm processor camera system with 690 million transistors, fast LTE and world's first achievements including high-speed wireless charging, huge battery, waterproof design, in-display fingerprint scanner, 3D face unlock, high resolution OLED display, And plenty of RAM and storage, the check mark is absolutely large.

Only the notification LED is being discarded. It was covered by a headphone jack, but it is still roaming in the Mate 20 Pro. However, there is no headphone jack. Huawei includes a decent USB-C connection Apple EarPods lookup inside the dongle and box. We're not worried about the missing 3.5mm jacks when Apple launched a great Pixel USB-C earbud at $ 30, and the wireless headphones have greatly improved, than when Apple entered the idea with the iPhone 7 in 2016. Mate 20 Pro is a very expensive phone, and the things that Huawei bundles are just fine. Pixel 3 XL and Galaxy Note 9 (with AKG earphones) are ahead of Huawei's new flagship.

Google and Samsung's Big Boy Phone, Apple's iPhone XS Max is the latest direct competitor to the Mate 20 Pro, but familiar with Apple's latest mobile phone I will mainly compare Pixel 3 XL and Note 9. The 6.4-inch Mate 20 Pro (Mate 20 Pro) gives them a noble sense of presence. It is shorter and nearly the same thickness as the Pixel 3 XL, but much narrower, making it much easier to use with one hand. Note 9 belongs to all other classes of size and ergonomics. Where the Mate 20 Pro can escape from an enlarged phone, Note 9 looks much like a retracted tablet. Huawei's new mobile phone in the pixel period means that the mobile phone is a happy medium, since neither the width of the pixel 3 and the pixel 3 XL have the width of a larger pixel and neither of these two phones turned out to be unsuitable. 50% "data-upload-width =" 2040 "src =" The problematic curves are as follows: (1) (1) (2) (2) (3) (5) (5)

The Mate 20 Pro colorway in green and blue replaces the smooth glass finish commonly found in today's flagship phones with subtle textures. Huawei calls the hyper optical pattern. It is a part of a groove cut into a glass, but as a result, the surface does not pick up the fingerprint, but it creates a vinyl-like sound when it comes in contact, which leads to scraping. I can not feel that the Mate 20 Pro is less slippery than other glass phones, but I did not drop them once a week for review. Huawei's power button placement increases the usability of this phone. Like Pixel on Google, it's located below the volume locker, not the above, and it's naturally reachable to most people.

The screen of Galaxy Note 9 is as follows. It's amazing. The Mate 20 Pro is next to it in terms of sharpness, brightness and sharpness. However, Huawei added sleeves that give a "paper-like listening experience" by measuring ambient light using the so-called Natural Tone mode, which works exactly like Apple's True Tone, and adjusting the color temperature of the screen accordingly. When you review and edit your photos, you should always like and maintain the feature even if the color accuracy degrades.

The only complaint about Huawei's Mate 20 Pro display is the curved aspect, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S7 Edge. Since the front curve is symmetrically matched to the rear glass curve, the sides of the Mate 20 Pro are narrowed to almost one point. Obviously it is not ideal for a comfortable grip. I want a lighter side of the Pixel 3 XL. When watching a video in the landscape, it can be seen that the surface of the Mate 20 Pro is particularly distorted, especially in sports broadcasts with scoring broadcast graphics.

You have seen the notch of the Mate 20 Pro. Huawei uses the same technology as Apple's Face ID in the new system, and the company calls 3D Face Unlock. Now I have learned the training. The phone combines an IR sensor with more than 30,000 invisible points projected on the face to obtain a three-dimensional picture and identify the authenticated user. Huawei's system works quickly and reliably. In particular, it is much slower and more confusing than Samsung's combination of iris recognition and face recognition. There was a problem with the face unlock function of the Mate 20 Pro only in the hood.

Look at Huawei's Mate 20 Pro notch cover and virtually an extra zero room. Everything is packed tightly. Other biometric identification systems added by Huawei (the pressure-sensing fingerprint reader built into the display) contribute to space efficiency by eliminating the need for separate space to install a separate scanner. This fingerprint reader, which is nearly as fast as the existing fingerprint reader that Huawei puts in other devices, is particularly surprising, but still sufficient and accurate. In most cases, Huawei's 3D Face Unlock noticed me before putting my finger on the screen. <p class= The slogan "More cameras are better" is the key to LG and Samsung's success. Huawei now has three cameras. On the rear of its flagship. Monochromatic sensor of P20 Pro and previous Huawei mobile phone disappeared. Huawei argued that the image sensor is so good that it no longer needs the help of a secondary sensor to deliver sharpness and detail to the main camera's photos. Still, some users will miss the excellent black and white photos that Huawei can shoot with its dedicated sensor.

Mate 20 Pro is rich in creative flexibility, with ultra-wide angle, wide-angle and telephoto cameras to choose from. The ultra-wide angle lens with a focal length of 16mm is convenient when you want to capture the entire picture because it is close to group photography, scenery, and something big. The camera has doubled as an extreme macro shooter. This is a cute and unusual feature and works well. Huawei automatically eliminates distortion of image processing and the results are really good.

The main camera of the Mate 20 pro has a 40 megapixel sensor that combines four adjacent pixels into a single, 10 megapixel shot with enhanced detail. I have made extensive comparisons between Pixel 3 XL and Galaxy Note 9, but Huawei's hardware does not have two other dynamic ranges. With Google and Samsung's mobile phones able to reveal dark scenery and maintain a blue sky, the Mate 20 Pro accurately determined that I wanted a bright view but could not restrain the sky from breaking.

Huawei's photo looks very fresh like Samsung. Sometimes it makes them look crunchy. I use very specialized terminology here, but basically there is a degree of clarity that is ideal for photography, and the crisis is a step further. Details and clarity begin to crumble.

If Huawei's Master AI processing is not possible, Huawei's camera is noisier than Pixel or Note. That means Mate 20 Pro sometimes produces the finest of the three parts, but that noise needs to be heard. So it is better to keep AI on. The problem is that Huawei's artificial intelligence is still too aggressive in the optimization of a given shot and Huawei does not take a second unprocessed picture for redundancy, so there is no retreat if the situation goes wrong. Until AI is fully trusted, Huawei must allow the edits to be reversed or allowed to be taken and applied. 50% 50% "data-upload-width =" 50% "when the Samsung Note 9 exhibited when handling trees and the sky" style = "object- 4224 "src ="×5632/1200×0/filters:focal (0x0: 4224×5632): no_upscale () / /uploads/chorus_asset/file/13324587/IMG_20181023_195046.jpg “/>

On the other hand, the mate 20 camera of the mate is disappointing in the vicinity. It has a 24 megapixel resolution of the wild, but it does not make sense when everything is very soft and lacks in detail. My face is always photographed in foggy glass, even if you turn it to 0 (assuming you want to go in one direction instead of the corresponding "more fat face" toggle) with a beautifying and offensive sense of "thinner face" option It seems to be.

I think that Huawei's rear camera system is great and competitive, but it does not blow me away in the same way as a Pixel camera. Pixel 3 has done some better than the already excellent Pixel 2 camera. On the other hand, the Mate 20 Pro camera has been greatly improved in P20 Pro. There are too many of these similarities so you should revisit the P20 Pro review to get a better understanding of how the Mate 20 Pro is shot.

Vlad Savov / The Verge Photos (19659062) I applaud the excellent hardware and performance of my company's software, The new EMUI 9 is a great base for Android's 9 Pie with our latest October 1 security patch. Gesture-based multitasking outperforms Google's inconsistent new behavior in the Pixel launcher. Samsung's simplified Android settings menu tends to finish each section with the "Are you looking for something else?" Helper, and now it's a good idea to use the "Are you looking for other settings?" Dark mode. OLED screen – And color temperature adjustment function is well implemented and user control is welcome.

But Huawei's software is not what you enjoy, but what you enjoy. . One of them is a bug. Google Keep has crashed me in two seconds since I started on Mate 20 Pro. I had to uninstall, restart the phone, and then reinstall. SwiftKey is a preloaded keyboard on this phone, and the animated gesture traces changed into a very pixelated mess during one swipe typing. I had to reboot the phone again. My lock screen wallpaper has been changed once to return to my selected image in the next scene. I know that this is being sold on an artificial intelligence phone, but artificial intelligence should be predictable, not voluntary.

Huawei makes some welcome adjustments to the basic way that Android works. Its shared submenu is a poor effort to copy iPhone downgrade from Android's default. Mate 20 Pro can do nothing but lock the screen. Until Huawei denied me that ability, I did not know how many useless emails were manually deleted from the lock screen of Pixel. I've listed more of these hurdles in my previous P20 Pro review, so do not repeat it and there will be a lot of overlap between EMUI and a small portion of UI friction. It is not clear whether these shortcomings overwhelm the advantages of the Kirin 980 processor's agility and efficiency. With Huawei 20 Pro, Huawei aimed to hit Galaxy Note 9 on its own, and was a little surprised to conclude that Huawei was a success. . The Mate 20 Pro offers a more stable camera, more body dimensions, better performance, faster unlocking of the face, and, in my judgment, a more comfortable display. But the Mate 20 Pro is a bit more expensive than Samsung's phones today, which complicates matters.

Even if you only agree to see the Mate 20 Pro as a competitor to Note 9 and Pixel, 3 XL still makes the loss of this phone in the US market a real loss. This year LG and HTC lost their relevance, and US consumers prefer Apple's Samsung or flagship smartphone. Google Pixels and OnePlus devices turned out to be outside vendors' choices.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a great phone with great and unique features, and once the price goes up, it will become a realistic competitor. I am absolutely confident now that (a) it gives a great deal of satisfaction to people living outside the United States and (b) I need a comprehensive list of good features and desirable specifications.
