How to send private messages in Slack
Sending direct messages in Slack is a great way to get information from individual members of your workspace.

is the main means of communication for your organization or team, so you must understand how to navigate the tool. If you can't catch up quickly, you run the risk of getting lost in an avalanche of threads and messages. One way to help use Slack effectively is by using private messages. After all, there may be particular pieces of information that only certain users need to read in their workspace.

I want to show you how to send private messages to other users in your workspace. The process is the same in both the mobile application and the desktop, so I will do a demonstration in the mobile version of Slack (for Android 10, to be exact).

What you will need

To make this happen, you will need the Slack application (Android / iOS), an account of Slack and a workspace to which you have been assigned. With those who are ready, let's send a message to their colleagues.

The direct message window

Your direct messages are in your own window. From that window you can send and receive all messages from all users in your workspace. To access that window, open the Slack application and then open the sidebar. To open the sidebar, perform one of the following actions:

  • Swipe right from the left edge of the screen (on Android 9 or less).
  • Swipe down diagonally from the left edge of the screen (on Android 10).
  • Touch the work area icon in the upper left corner of the screen (in all Android versions).

From the sidebar, touch Direct messages ( Figure A ).

Locate the user you want to send the message to. If your workspace has a large number of users, you can always use the search tool to quickly locate the person you want to send messages to. Once you have located the name in question, touch the user and, from the resulting window ( Figure C ), start writing your message.

Once you have written your message, touch the send button (arrow pointing to the right) and your message will reach the recipient.

Reading messages

When you receive a direct message, you will see a list of messages sent by all users. Any message with a green dot next to its name in the sidebar, in Direct messages ( Figure D ) is not read.

DM group

If your workspace allows it (since workspaces can be configured to not allow direct group messages), you can select multiple users (from the user list) by touching all the users you want in the group DM and then touching Start ( Figure E ).

If your workspace does not allow e sending direct group messages, you can only select one entry in the user selection window.

Delete a message

An occasion may arise when you need to delete a message. This is not as intuitive as you might think. To delete a message, follow these steps:

  1. Open the direct message in question.
  2. Near the top of the screen, touch the drop-down arrow associated with the name of the sender of the message.
  3. In the resulting window, tap Close conversation ( Figure F ).
