How to search the web with Bing in Notepad

To search with Bing in Notepad:

  1. Select some text in Notepad .
  2. Press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + E to search the web in your default browser.

As part of the continuous improvements to the Windows 10 Notepad, Microsoft added a web search feature built into the Windows update of October 10, 2018 last year. This allows you to quickly search for highlighted text, without having to copy and paste a selection into your browser.

This is a quick but convenient tip that is hidden in the "Edit" menu of Notepad. To perform a quick search, highlight a word or phrase in your document. You can then press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + E to start a new web search for the text.

Notepad will respect your default browser, so you don't need to worry about Edge launching suddenly. However, it will stay with Bing, since there is no way to customize the search engine that is used.

Microsoft has embarked on a significant improvement program for Notepad, years after the last update of the program. The changes that will come in future Windows 10 updates include a move to the Microsoft Store, which will decouple the Windows Notepad and allow Microsoft to push future updates faster. Although the search with Bing is a minor feature in comparison, it further improves the overall usability of Notepad and is easily ignored if you don't need it.
