How to remove a coffee cup or other object from your video

In the latest version of Adobe After Effects, the company added a user-desired tool, Content-Aware Fill, which provides a function similar to the Content-Aware Fill tool in Photoshop. Now you can easily remove objects from moving video, just as you could in still images for years. It works on all kinds of objects, from still pictures to moving pictures, and even coffee cups.

The use of After Effects in After Effects is very similar to how it works in Photoshop: simply select the area you want to delete and have it replaced with magically generated images that seem to be meant to be there all the time. But that does not mean that it will always produce the best results: I used the tool to remove the coffee cup from this scene but I was not completely satisfied with the results. I am sure that with a little more tweaking I could achieve something I would like, but instead, I went back to the process I used for years simply by following the movement and using the footage from the original clips to mask the unwanted object. 19659003] Original images Clip: HBO

Images with Content-Aware Fill

This process is a bit more complicated than the almost one-click process that Content-Aware Fill offers, but it is not very difficult to do once you know the steps.

  • Open After Effects
  • Import your images
  • Create a new composition with your images
  • Cut out your workspace in the area you need to correct
  • Right-click on your layer and select Track & Stabilize> Track Motion
  • In the Track Motion panel, together with Position, select Rotation and Scale

  • Use the two Trackers to select pixels near the object you want to delete. Borders and corners or high-contrast areas are great for tracking in

  • In the Track Motion panel, select Scan forward and let the motion continue and create keyframes.
  • If the track seems to be off, you can try to track different areas until you get a track that matches the movements of the cameras

  • Create a new null layer in the composition
  • In the Track Motion panel, go to Edit target … and select the Null option, then apply the X and Y positions

  • In this clip there is a section of the table that looks like we can use it to cover the object, so let's find the framework that works best
  • . In that frame, right-click and freeze the frame by selecting Time> Freeze frame

  • . The Pen Tool, create a mask in the Freeze Frame layer, then move the entire layer to cover the object and align it as best as possible. You may need to refine the mask after placing it; I crumpled the edges of the mask to mix them better.

  • In the Mask layer, use the Selection Whip to select the Null, this will cause the Mask layer to settle to the Null attributes, including the keyframes for the position, rotation and scale.

  • When previewing the work area, you can see how the mask layer moves along with the null value, it matches the position of the table.
  • Next, form the default effects and settings panel, find the Effects Exposure and Add grain and add to the mask layer [19659024] Adjust the exposure to better match the position of the table
  • Adjust the grain to match the grain of the camera (since we made a frozen frame there is none, so it would stand out)

And that's it! Now you just have to upload the images without a cup of coffee to the distribution servers of your massive content company.

No more cup!

You can also use the same null value to be a parent of other layers, too. Say if you want to add something new in …
