PDF is a very versatile document format with which almost all computer users are familiar. Consequently, it is a good option when you need to share information in a standardized format that is not hindered by distribution.
Obtaining information in a PDF has historically been a problem. However, Microsoft simplified things in Windows 10 by adding a native "print to PDF" feature in the operating system. This means that any printable content, such as a text file or a web page, can be converted to PDF in a couple of clicks.
We will be "printing" a web page for the purposes of this guide. You can choose any printable content that you have access to.
Start by clicking on the "Print" button in the application you are using. You will often find this in the "File" menu. In many applications, Ctrl + P will work as a keyboard shortcut to open the print pop-up window.
The message you see may look slightly different depending on the application you are using. Modern applications in the Windows Store will display a larger window with a more contemporary visual appearance. You can see examples of both styles in the screenshots of this guide.
Regardless of the pop-up window you see, there must be an option to select the printer you want to use. Choose "Microsoft Print to PDF". Now you can customize the print job as normal: the options for printing a subset of pages should work normally.
The Microsoft Print to PDF printer is a virtual printer. It takes the input it receives from the application and converts it into an output PDF. Regarding the application, the document has been "printed", but it has actually been saved in a file.
When you click "Print" you will see a pop-up window in File Explorer. This allows you to choose where to save the PDF. The PDF will be created and saved in the selected directory.
