How to make a sound recording in Windows 10

To make a sound recording in Windows 10, start the Voice Recorder application from the Start menu.

Applies to all versions of Windows 10 [19659005] Windows 10 comes with a selection of integrated "boxed" applications to simplify common tasks. You can make sound recordings with the Voice Recorder application preinstalled, without the need for additional software.

First, look for Voice Recorder in the Start menu. The application interface could not be simpler: there is a large blue recording button and very little else. Click on the button to start recording.

Once the recording has started, the play button will become a stop button. Press it again to end the recording.

During recording, you get access to two new buttons, which are displayed below the start / stop control. The option on the left is a family pause button, which allows you to temporarily suspend recording.

The button on the right is perhaps more interesting. It allows you to mark interesting sections in the recording. These will appear as bookmarks that can be clicked when you listen to the recording in the Voice Recorder application. This is especially useful when recording phone calls: click on the flag to mark a particularly notable point for later reference.

Once you have finished recording, you can listen to it within the Voice Recorder application. Get a basic list of all recordings, sorted by recording date. Click on a file to open it in the playback panel.

Press the large play button to listen. At the top of the screen, you will see a strip of all the markers in the clip. Click on a marker to jump directly to your position in the recording. You can add more bookmarks using the flag button below the playback control.

At the bottom of the application, you will find buttons to Share, Trim, Delete and Rename the clip. You can also right-click a recording to open its file location. Recordings are saved as M4A files in "Sound recordings" in your Documents folder.
