Whether you never use your touch screen or follow the troubleshooting steps, sometimes you may need to turn it off. That is how.

Microsoft loves to announce that its Surface and other third-party devices include touch screen capability. However, if you do not use the touch function or need to disable it on certain occasions. Or, you can use it a lot and need to solve a problem. Whatever the case, if you need to turn off the touch screen, here is how to do it.

Deactivate the touch screen on Windows 10 devices

To deactivate the touch screen on your device, you must enter the old school Control Panel. The easiest way to get there is to press the Windows key and type : devmgr.msc and press Enter. Or, choose the result Best match at the top of the search list.

It is also worth noting that you can open Device Manager by typing it in the search field in the Settings application and it will open on the top right

Once you have opened Device Manager, scroll down and expand the "Human interface devices" menu. Then scroll down and right click on HID compatible touch screen and select Disable device in the menu.

After that, you should verify that you want to activate the click Yes in the dialog box that appears.

That's it. You do not need to log out or restart your machine. Your touch screen should now be disabled. Try it by touching the screen.

Now, if you decide later that you want to turn it on again, you can do it. Simply return to the same menu in Device Manager and right-click on HID-compatible touchscreen and this time choose Enable from the menu.

Again, it is not necessary to log out or restart the system. Your touch screen should now be working again.

Summary

This is useful if you never use the touch function on your device's screen or if you are trying to troubleshoot an unresponsive touch screen. However, this is not the most convenient way to disable touch. I would like to see Microsoft add a switch that could enable or disable in the Settings application. For example, you can use a keyboard combo on how to enable or disable the touch screen of a Chromecast.
