Google Play Pass is an Apple Arcade competitor for $5 per month

Google Play Pass, an obvious competitor of Apple Arcade, is now live, and offers 350 games and applications that are not games for $ 5 per month. But to sweeten the deal, you can try it for free for 10 days, after which you can sign up to get $ 2 per month discounted for a full year before the regular price goes into effect.

Unfortunately, it only comes out in the US. UU. , and it is not clear when the service will be available elsewhere.

While Google mocked that Google Play Pass would arrive in early September, the company was shy with the details. But now that the service was launched by surprise, visibly shortly after the public launch of Apple Arcade, against which it is clearly competing, we know almost everything.

How it is, and unlike Apple Arcade

It is not accidental that Google Play Pass was launched as soon after the subscription service focused on Apple's large-catalog mobile games, but they differ.

On the one hand, the Google Play Pass subscription library is larger, with 350 games and non-game applications, a deviation from the exclusive Apple Arcade games catalog. But while the latter's selection criteria only allow strictly new titles, Google Play Pass includes a lot of existing games, including beloved classics such as Limbo, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Monument Valley 2, Terraria and others.

And yet, as iconic as it may be, KOTOR came out in 2003: there is something to say that it only includes new titles selected in its service for a more curated experience. In our short time with the service, we already found the Apple Arcade catalog difficult to examine. Navigating over 300 is a higher order.

We also do not know the complete list of games and applications that appear in the Google Play Pass, making it more difficult to classify for Apple service. Two thirds of the catalog are games, while applications include products such as AccuWeather and the Hi-Q recorder.

Like Apple Arcade, the games that appear in Google Play Pass have no advertising and do not have in-app purchases. If you bought a game before it now appears on the service, you will find that all your monetization was removed and the additional content was completely unlocked, according to The Verge .

Google Play Pass is cross-platform like Apple Arcade, and supposedly works with mobile devices, laptops and tablets with Play Store version 16.6.25 or Android 4.4 and later, according to the official Play Pass Frequently Asked Questions .

The future of Google Play Pass

Google Play Pass is not as compromised as Apple Arcade with developers: it is not directly financing developers for games to appear on the service. But neither does it force exclusivity, which is an important feature (and a strict requirement) for games to appear in Apple Arcade.

Of course, the real value of any of the services is in the coming games, which could make the cautious if an essential title appears in one or the other.
