Facebook’s Portal video chat devices launch today

Portal and Portal Plus, the home video chat devices on Facebook, will be available in the first month of release.

This product is almost exclusively focused on video chat. It also displays pictures, plays music, and supports a small number of video networks, but the feature set at launch is very limited.

Available primarily for chat. To meet people through Facebook Messenger, Facebook has built a smart camera trick to make it easy. Both devices have a single camera fixed at the top, but the camera will zoom in and follow you around, so you do not have to lift your phone while chatting. That way you can move around the room and make calls.

But the story about this product is not something you can and can not do. It's good to have a microphone and camera connected to Facebook at home. Facebook has emphasized its built-in privacy features. (Although there is a button to turn off the camera altogether), it may not be enough to comfort the skeptical people, who are filled with the latest privacy scandals.

Portal and Portal Plus will be shipped today. They will be sold through Facebook's Web site as well as Best Buy and Amazon. The smaller Portal is sold for $ 199 and the larger Portal Plus for $ 349. You can get a $ 100 discount if you buy two at the time of launch. It has something to do with what other portal users would like to chat with.
