Facebook is adding quoted replies to Messenger conversations

Facebook is updating Messenger today with a new feature: the ability to cite and respond to specific messages in a conversation, which makes it easier to track things (especially in larger group chats), reports VentureBeat .

The feature comes as an expansion of the company's existing reaction emoji. Now, when you hold down an individual message, in addition to simply adding a reaction, you can respond with a new "answer" button, which will attach a cited version of the original message to your response. The cited messages are not your own message threads, they will still appear online with the rest of the chat, but it seems useful enough.

It's a fairly simple feature that the Facebook-owned messaging application, WhatsApp, has already offered for a while, so it makes sense for Facebook to take it to Messenger. The movement is also accentuated by the company's general ambition to create a multiplatform system that would unite Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram messages. Achieving comparable characteristics in all three platforms would undoubtedly facilitate the final merger when it occurs.
