Wattpad, the online story-sharing community for promising and established writers, signed a "first look" agreement with Sony Pictures Television to develop new projects based on its vast catalog of loaded stories, Wattpad announced yesterday. .
With this new partnership, Wattpad will essentially give Sony a heads up when it comes to projects that could be a good television series. According to Wattpad, the two companies "will work together to identify and develop popular narratives of the billions of story uploads that have been shared on Wattpad," and Sony will have access to data from Wattpad's machine learning efforts that will help to go through the site's uploads, identifying which stories have potential in other media formats.
Originally founded as a mobile reading platform, Wattpad has constantly been transformed into a library of user-generated content, allowing writers to upload their own work and, as a result, accumulate a huge catalog of work content. original. Earlier this year, he launched Wattpad Books, a stamp dedicated to the book that collects the best works to publish as print editions.
The site has also been working for years to develop a conduit between its writers and Hollywood community. Wattpad now says that almost a thousand stories have been adapted in one way or another. The company signed an agreement in 2016 with NBCUniversal to develop such projects, similar to its agreement with Syfy Channel last year to develop a project based on one of the site's science fiction stories, Due Date. Wattpad also worked with Sony before this new agreement, when he bought the rights to adapt a series called Death is My BFF by the writer Katarina E. Tonks.
