Since the launch of the first generation iPad in 2010, Apple has dominated the tablet market. Originally released with iPhone OS 3.2, the first-generation 9.7 "iPad was architecturally similar to a large iPhone. With successive models, Apple has differentiated the iPhone iPad by adding support for input methods such as the Apple Pencil and different screen sizes , such as the iPad Mini 7.9 "and the iPad Pro 10.5", 11 "and 12.9".

As the iPad line has expanded to a completely separate product category, Apple announced at its World Conference of Developers 2019 (WWDC) that has changed the name of iOS for iPad as "iPadOS" (starting with iOS 13) to highlight and guide the functions that differentiate the iPad from other devices. This follows the trend of Apple's nomenclature of watchOS for Apple Watch and tvOS for Apple TV. What is iPadOS?

For the release of iOS 13, Apple is changing the name of the iOS variant for iPad as iPadOS, effectively making it a superset of phone-oriented iOS. iPadOS inherits all the improvements that come to iOS 13 and includes new features and optimizations specific to the iPad.

"It has become a truly different experience," Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering, told CNET in an exclusive interview on iPadOS. "It's not an iPhone experience. It's not a Mac experience. The name is a recognition of that."

How is iPadOS different from iOS?

iPadOS brings the iPad closer to the parity of features with the entry-level MacBook, which makes it more possible to use it as a replacement for a laptop.

iPadOS includes the following features:

  1. Tablet-oriented home screen – The iPadOS home screen now supports persistent widgets, similar to widgets on Android tablets since Android 3.0 (Honeycomb).

  2. Enhanced multitasking – Users can move between Slide Over applications by sliding their finger down or up to see all applications in the Slide Over view. Slide Over applications can be moved to full screen by dragging them to the top or closed by opening the application selector and moving the application up.

  3. Desktop Safari – Safari now loads the desktop version of web pages, optimized for touch screens, as well as better support for Google Docs and WordPress editor. Some 30 new keyboard shortcuts were added to Safari.

  4. Compatibility with external drives – USB drives and SD cards are now compatible with files, allowing you to connect directly to an iPad without the need for a third-party program or an intermediary Mac for file management.

  5. Files application improvements – Files adds a column view similar to Finder on Mac OS, as well as support for SMB shares.

  6. Camera support – Cameras can be connected directly to the iPad and photos can be imported for editing in iPad applications, such as Adobe Lightroom.

  7. Font support – Fonts can be downloaded from the App Store, for use in various applications.

  8. New gestures for faster editing – Copy, paste and undo can now be done with three finger gestures, with three fingers to copy, three fingers to paste and three fingers to undo, available for own applications and from third parties.

  9. Apple Pencil Enhancements – When sliding from the corner of the screen with Apple Pencil, the dialing view opens, allowing users to write down anything on the screen and export it. The latency for Apple Pencil was reduced from 20 ms to 9 ms.

  10. Sidecar – Users can extend their Mac OS desktop on the iPad as a second screen, or reflect the content between both screens. When used together with Apple Pencil, Sidecar can make the iPad be used as a drawing tablet. The sidecar works through a cable connection or wirelessly within 10 meters.

Mouse and trackpad support will reach iPadOS as an accessibility feature, according to Jason Cipriani of ZDNet, and noted that "mouse support is an AssistiveTouch function and also works when a Magic Trackpad is connected to the iPad," and which provides "a circular cursor that moves across the screen, acting like a finger when touching the screen. It is not clear how multitouch gestures would work with a mouse pointer."
