Apple offers software updates on iOS, watchOS, and HomePod, while preparing a much larger version with new features coming out this fall. The iOS 12.4 release introduces the new "iPhone Migration" option, which introduces the ability to "transfer data wirelessly and migrate directly from the old iPhone to the new iPhone," according to the update release notes. Apple has already offered wireless transmission options between iOS devices, so it's not clear what's new with the new tools. Because Apple is using the word "direct", you can early guess that it is less dependent on iCloud and Wi-Fi.
iOS 12.4 enhances Apple News Plus navigation to access all participating publications at the top of the news plus section (including newspapers like Wall Street Journal ).
Apple says today it includes security fixes that re-enable WatchUp's Walkie Talkie feature. Apple Watch simply went offline after it discovered a vulnerability that could potentially have heard someone else's iPhone secretly without their consent. Apple said it had not seen any signs of exploitation by anyone before it was reported. The latest watchOS update version 5.3 also extends Apple Watch's EKG functionality and support for irregular heartbeat detection in Canada and Singapore.
And finally, Apple says its HomePod smart speakers should now work in Japan and Taiwan.
Beta version of iOS 12.4 includes native support for Apple's upcoming credit card, Apple Card. The Apple Card will be released sometime in the summer. The Apple Card website is still unchanged, so Apple is not ready to accept card applications to market in partnership with Goldman Sachs. The company can apply for a card test that includes its own staff, a card that can be refunded on a daily cash basis for Apple and Apple Pay purchases without charge, and a laser etched physical card made of titanium that can be used wherever contactless payments are available. It has not been accepted yet.
