Amazon’s HQ2 deal isn’t looking great for Arlington County

Amazon may have withdrawn from New York City, but there is still one HQ2 left in Arlington, Virginia. A contract of $ 23 million has been drafted for a county board to vote on March 16, and The Washington Post saw the terms of the agreement in advance.

The contract does not require Amazon to provide construction workers with a living wage, which would normally be called a project labor agreement, and does not require Amazon to contribute to the Arlington Affordable Housing Trust Fund. Requests for housing funds are usually made after a company returns to Arlington with more specific development plans.

It's almost as if Arlington fears asking for favors after Amazon reconsidered its deal in New York and withdrew at the last minute. New York was one of the two winners chosen for HQ2 last November, and the plans were already under discussion. But the big protests and opposition from local politicians ultimately convinced Amazon to abandon its plans for an office in New York.

All Amazon needs to do in Arlington is meet the office space requirements. It should occupy 64,000 square feet of office space by the end of July 2020, 252,800 square feet by 2021 and 5,576 million by 2034. As Amazon reaches its office space objectives, it will receive a partial payment of $ 23 million.

On the other hand, the county is expected to pay Amazon as hotel taxes increase. It is expected that Amazon's arrival in Arlington will increase hotel reservations and generate an increase in hotel revenues, which the county then removes to the top to grant Amazon. Amazon will be paid 15 percent of any hotel tax increase. Amazon will also receive two days after any Freedom of Information Act requests to take appropriate action or disclose only those records that are mandatory to disclose.

In general, the agreement seems to be completely in Amazon's favor, while the citizens of Arlington and the workers on the Amazon site get the short end.
