A first look at Spotify on the Apple Watch

Spotify is testing the upcoming Apple Watch app. Before we launched, we were able to access Spotify's Apple Watch app to see what products were being used. The app itself appears to be an initial release with very basic features. Apple Watch does not have offline support to play Spotify songs far from iPhone, and you can not stream songs to Apple Watch via LTE.

Instead, this Spotify Apple Watch app is primarily used as a Spotify Connect controller. You can play Spotify content and change music on your iPhone or other device connected to your account. If you're listening to Spotify songs on your iPhone, Spotify's app can be used to override Apple Watch's "Now Playing" screen, control music playback, or select playlists.

It is the first time you can directly access Spotify playlist / song controls from Apple Watch without using iPhone, but you can select playlists individually and mix them together. Spotify also includes complications for Apple Watch, but in the current beta, you can not show what's currently playing or set up shortcuts to your workout playlist.

There are a few additions to Apple's existing "Now Playing" screen. still. Since you can add your favorite songs to the library, there are haptic and audio feedback (Apple Watch Series 4) when adjusting the volume using the digital crown.

It is unclear when Spotify plans to introduce this Apple Watch app. The company is somewhat quiet about the plan. "We are always testing new products and experiences, but there is currently no news to share," a Spotify spokesperson said. Either way, the initial version of the test is very basic. Fortunately, this is an early release and we have planned more features in the future.
